Question: How accurate is Peptest?

Answer: Peptest is a highly accurate diagnostic test with validated performance measures as indicated below:

• Specificity: 87%
• Sensitivity: 88%
• Pepsin detection limit 16 ng/ml

Question: What should I do once I get my diagnosis?

Answer: The exact treatment pathway you follow will depend on your symptoms and the results of your Peptest analysis should be discussed with your healthcare team in conjunction with all other evidence.

Question: What do I get with my results?

Answer: You will receive a report indicating whether each sample is positive or negative. If positive you will be given a reading of the concentration of pepsin in the sample. Please see Report example.

Question: What is Pepsin?

Answer: Pepsin is a protease originating from pepsinogen secreted into gastric juice from chief cells and is only found in the stomach. It's presence in the oesophagus or more proximally in the laryngopharyngeal region and airways suggests gastro oesophageal and extra oesophageal reflux.

Question: Is reflux disease dangerous?

Answer: Reflux is a chronic disease which can in a small percentage of individuals lead to more serious conditions such as Barrett's oesophagus, oesophageal adenocarcinoma and potentially laryngeal cancer.

Question: Is Peptest available in the USA.

Answer: Yes, we can currently only test samples from the USA in our laboratory in the UK. In order to do this the following procedure is followed:

1. We send you sample collection tubes (with full instructions) to your preferred address in the USA 
2. You take the samples in accordance with the instructions and return these to our laboratory in the UK so that they reach us within 5 days of you taking the samples. 
3. Your samples will be analysed and your results form returned to you via email within 48 hours of receipt of the samples.

To collect a sample you simply clear the throat with a cough and spit the resultant saliva into the collection tube (s) provided, according to the included instructions.

You then return your samples to the Peptest laboratory for analysis and you will receive the results report within two days indicating whether each sample is positive or negative and the level of pepsin in each sample.

You'll also receive a letter addressed to your doctor explaining the results and what they mean.
