MRI-guided Focused Ultrasound (no incision surgery) to remove tumors and cancers; applied to tremors in Parkinson's

while merely temporary treatment at best for PD, it makes sense to explore ultrasound surgery to target/kill cancers and tumors.

this is a very viable form of no-cut surgery to treat/target/remove tumors and cancers, and has some intrigue/potential for PD, but so far it seems PD patients who have miraculous 'tremor eliminator' surgery by sound, see symptoms gradually worsen 3-36 months later and need more treatments.

the problem with all surgery is that beyond 'cleanup' they dont/cant alter the pathology of diseases that continue unabated.

also, these treatments need to shave your head and immobilize the patient for up to 4 hours in an MRI tube, so valium is key.

Kimberly suffers from Parkinson's disease, but after the shaking began to be disabling, she knew she had to find an answer. Kimberly took part in a focused ultrasound clinical trial, and now she's back on the road.

Parkinson's patients receive focused ultrasound treatment at University of Virginia - 3min
Focused Ultrasound Foundation
Neurosurgeon W. Jeffrey Elias, MD and his team at the University of Virginia are once again charting new territory for focused ultrasound. As a follow-up to their ground-breaking and successful essential tremor pilot clinical trial, they have launched a new study using focused ultrasound to treat patients with tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease. To be eligible for the study, patients must have symptoms that remain disabling despite optimal doses of medication.

So far, the study has treated four patients and is expected to enroll 26 more. The trial is following a randomized double-blinded protocol, and patients do not immediately know if they are receiving an actual focused ultrasound treatment or a sham procedure.

The randomization process will ultimately assign 20 patients to the study's treatment arm and 10 to the sham group. Three months after-treatment, assignments will be "un-blinded" and sham arm patients will be eligible to crossover into the treatment group.

More information about the clinical trial can be found here:

How Focused Ultrasound Works
Swedish Neuroscience Institute
Stephen J. Monteith, MD, a neurosurgeon at Swedish Cerebrovascular Center, explains how therapeutic use of focused ultrasound has the potential for having a huge impact on many patients' lives. The range in treatment includes patients with Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor and Epilepsy.

"For many patients, this is a very attractive option, Dr. Monteith explains. "It's a non-invasive treatment, where we don't have to perform open-brain surgery."

-- IT CHANGED MY HUSBANDS LFE.  He had the HIFU - High Intensity Focused Ultrasound on his brain to burn the area causing his Parkinsons tremors. It not only helped his tremors but his cognitive, feeling of falling forward, does not drag his leg and his arm moves again.  IF YOU HAVE PARKINSONS LOOK INTO IT.  I have my husband back and while it does not cure Parkinsons it has enabled him to get back to a normal life.

-- This treatment is 50k here in the usa and it is not covered by insurance in Arizona yet. I can't stand the tremors anymore and life is a bit harder. I would love to get this procedure done and if it helps some then i will be very happy.  When my adrenaline kicks in i shake soo much and tremble.

INSIGHTEC's Neuravive Essential Tremor Treatment - 2min
For patients suffering from #essentialtremor (ET), performing everyday tasks presents a challenge. For many of these patients, medication does not significantly improve their symptoms. Now there is a new treatment option - INSIGHTEC's #Neuravive Essential Tremor Treatment. Through focused ultrasound, this incisionless brain surgery can treat patients with essential tremors and help improve their quality of life. http://bit.ly/2VveGZv

HIFU: Treat without surgery the essential tremor and tremor of Parkinson's disease - 4min
Joseph suffered crippling tremor. I could neither write nor drink a glass of water. For this reason he resorted to the alternative offered by the Clínica Universidad de Navarra: a treatment using HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) to treat patients with incapacitating tremor. It is a non-invasive treatment, with an immediate result and its administration is performed on an outpatient basis using an MRI.

-- In the literature that I have read there is significant risk to the focused ultrasound treatment. I had lived with essential tremors for more than 20 years. A year ago I underwent a surgical procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation. I judged it a much safer procedure because not only was it preceded by an MRI, but the surgeon could physically determine the location do the motion center in the brain by manipulating the probe. The real bonus was that both sides of the brain were corrected in the same procedure.

-- I would love an update on this patient. Supposedly the effects from this treatment diminish over time, and it cannot be repeated.

ABC News (Australia)
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the nervous system that affects about 80,000 Australians. Unlike other diseases, there's been relatively little progress with Parkinson's - it's a complex illness with symptoms ranging from shaking limbs to long-term physical impairment.

Update on Focused Ultrasound for Parkinson's Disease – December 2021 - 36min
Focused Ultrasound Foundation
Chief Medical Officer for the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, Tim Meakem, MD, provides an overview of focused ultrasound for Parkinson's disease. Dr. Meakem first discusses the basics of focused ultrasound as a therapeutic technology. Then he reviews the current research status of focused ultrasound for Parkinson's, including ongoing clinical trials.

This recording was captured from his presentation to the Central Alabama Parkinson's Disease Support Group on December 13, 2021.

7:48 case of uterine fibroid and after treatment the tumor is absorbed into body. 25:44 what if we could treat the underlying cause of PD?? if we could use the BBB opening to put in therapeutic agents to manipulate/stop/reverse the PD process, that's the win we seek.

tremor dominant PD
*target = VIM (ventral intermediate nucleus), same as for essential tremors
PD dyskinesia (incl impaired mobility, rigidity, dyskinesia)
*target = GPi (internal portion of globus pallidus)
