Don't Get That Root Canal Without Watching This First! - 6m2015
Ramiel Nagel discusses the common practice of root canals. Find out what natural treatments might be possible instead and whether or not root canals are always needed.
0:35 weston price in 1936 said RCs aren't needed anymore because we know about nutrition. some holistic dentists say they can do a filling instead of RC and if tooth is inflamed they have protocols. 1:45 if you extract the tooth, now someone is toothless can't chew/eat. the danger of RC is they dont seal completely. 2:15 not every RC is wrong. 2:55 dentists dont check saliva pH which can instantly ID infection/decay without xrays or probes. 3:40 in general RCs are toxic, no reason to get them if you can eat healthy. have had tons who were told by dentist that they needed one or several RCs, they clean their diet up trying to avoid expensive RC, they go back to same or other dentist, and they see no need for RC. 4:20 almost always the teeth that need RCs are those with mercury fillings. 5:15 the bacteria is the problem, we must intervene with dental tools (ignoring the dietary/nutritional changes to starve the infection).

I visited a dentist for an emergency filling. Which is what I thought he was doing until after he was around half way through and took his hands out of my mouth and was ready to send me home. At this point he told me he had performed the first half of a root canal treatment and I must return the following week to put a crown on. Of course I had no choice but to go back the following week and get the crown put on top of the root canal filling.
Is this ethical? Aren't dentists supposed to get informed consent from the patient? The whole time I was lying there with my mouth open, numb from anaesthetic I thought he was just giving me a filling. And then when he gave me the bill he said I should return soon because two teeth on the other side need treatment too! needless to say I have now got Ramiel's book and am following as much as possible the diet (I'm vegetarian).

d. kennedy dds says:You do not need a lawyer to file an ethics complaint. Who Can/Should File a Complaint for making false statement? You will find the prohibition under the advertising section of the business and professions code. It is the obligation of the licensed dentist to know and comply with this law so file a complaint. The dentist claims there is only 5% mercury in an amalgam so let her explain that to the board. http://www.dbc.ca.gov/consumers/complaint_info.shtml
A complaint should be filed by anyone who believes that a licensee of the Board has engaged in illegal activities which are related to his/her professional responsibilities.
Note: Please refer to the Dental Practice Act, Business and Professions Code, Section 1680 at the following link: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov to view definitions of unprofessional conduct. Lying to a patient is unprofessional conduct.

A holistic dentist won't do a root canal simply because her/his license won't permit it - they will send you to someone who will. And they must know that braces weaken the dental ligament that causes people to lose their teeth when they get older. A healthy diet will fix your teeth but a dentist will never tell you that, implying he will fix it with dentistry. Dentists don't fix a thing, they only maintain.

Apparently, didn't you say in your book if the decay goes into the dentin the tooth surface won't heal. If there is too much decay in the dentin well then you are going to have to get a root canal even if you have had no filling. By the time I learned the truth it was too late - I had 5 root canals two failed and three more are failing and I need 3 more extractions. And no most don't know about healthy nutrition that is why many are in this mess in the first place. I always thought the dentist looked into a mouth and asked themselves what do I need to "fix" for the most profit.

For anyone who are wondering, no root canal does not hurt. However once the treatment is finished and the anesthetics drop you'll feel the most unbelievable pain. That's the truth.
--vonshangoeveryone's is different, some dentistry doesnt hurt before/during/after, others do. ask dds to wait 15min post-shot for anesthetic to work in, say you may need 2nd 3rd doses. often dentists start too early. dont skimp on the antibiotics afterward. some 5-15% of us are genetically able to feel every inch of pain, and metabolize/eat up the caine very fast.
in my case, all my soft tissue goes numb for 20-30 min before wearing off over next 20-30min but none of it touches the bone/tooth so i feel intense electric shock nerve pain with every torque/twist/pull of the roots out of the jaw. had two extractions from hell of lower molars #19+30, ditto repeat years later, first time 1hr in chair, this time 3 full hours of horror years later on other side, most of it spend on dosing more anesthetic shots, even into the bone to no avail. and there's nothing i'm yet finding i can do about it.
i did discover that nitrous oxide is toxic to many of us, specially if b12 deficient or if you have methylation hurdles aka have the MTHFR gene variant. i did once have an RC which went fine, but a hairline crack in tooth caused the molar to break the day after, forcing an extraction. could dental instrument vibrations from drilling/filling cause some teeth, if borderline, to crack? i think its plausible.

Have you been informed about the toxicity of composite? The material we as dentists use has been 'improved' the last couple of decades. So it's nicer to see and harder to break. But the deeper parts don't polymerize so well any more and these parts poison the (porous) dentin. Especially my not so thorough colleagues tend to fill up deep holes in molars with composite to the effect that the pulp gets so inflamed that they think the tooth needs a root canal. While all they did was poison the nerve via the bottom of the cavity. Down goes the neighborhood.
I agree that cavities most of the time don't need any filling at all. But most of my patients do like to have any gaps between molars closed to protect their gums from the impact of harder foods. To do that we use a more biocompatible material in the form of glasionomer. That actually helps to heal the surrounding tissues, including the nerve.

sadly free dental care for welfare patients wont work on you till you have pain....Ive resorted to using natural ways to heal & repair teeth with neem oil toothpaste. look into it you will be surprised how well it works. some ppl use coconut oil as an alternative
--vonshangodid a quick lookup, found: neem toothpaste is NOT neem oil. ... Neem oil is NOT safe to take internally, ESPECIALLY for children! Neem toothpaste is made with neem leaf and neem bark. Don't make toothpaste or oral care products with neem oil. Neem Toothpaste - What Neem Can Do For Your Teeth And Gums

actually I did coconut oil pulling and this is how my dead tooth started hurting! I know I have a dead tooth, but it was painless so I ignored the dentist's recommendation of doing a root canal. But since I initiated the pain with oil pulling, I'm scared that if I don't get it treated, it will hurt more in the future.
--
FVNT0M IIXdid u use cold coconut oil? some teeth are cold sensitive. I suggest you store it at room temp. You can also use neem toothpaste, it works better IMO. brush before bed, its the best time to do it.p.s. theres evidence against root canals, lil better to have the tooth pulled.--SleekcartimYea it was room temperature... I saw a couple videos about it, but it doesn't make sense to leave an infection untreated especially when there is no more blood supply going to that tooth. No blood supply means no white blood cells at the site to fight the infection. So I don't see how a dead nerve can be revived by changing my diet or brushing more... I mean this is my case, the dentist did cold test and electric-pulp test. I couldn't feel the cold and I couldn't feel the electrical shots sent to that tooth. So it's a pretty legit proof that the nerves are definitely dead in that tooth...--
FVNT0M IIX
Im no expert here easy to figure out the idea is to keep disinfecting the tooth & area so your body can start to heal it without having to fight infection at same time (im also taking supplements to promote tooth regrowth). I recently killed toothache pain with neem toothpaste & with one drop of neem oil (killed pain for one day) on Q tip rubbed on bad tooth & gum. I can tell coconut oil works also, but neem paste works better (it can even kill sinus infections!).--Sleekcartim
this is what I think too, maybe the bacteria is "happy" inside my tooth and not making me painful, but the oil is trying to interfere with its happy life so it started to revenge and send pain signals to my brain

a dentist never has to remove more tooth structor for prevention - they simply drill-happy the tooth until you need a crown then the suffocated tooth gets infected and you need a root canal. I think dentist do this all the time.

I hit my tooth more than a month ago, I can't feel cold, and It hurts a little when I bite, the tooth is getting dark, and the dentist say I need a root canal. I don't want one, what do I do?--Joe VignoloI had a necrotic pulp and was told that I needed the tooth extracted or root canal therapy. I worked with a holistic dentist and we came up with a third alternative. It's now been three and a half years. I still have the tooth, I've never had root canal therapy, I can chew on it without any pain and all the infection is gone. What we did was to drill a small hole through the side of the tooth into the pulp chamber. The dead pulp was then removed. Since then I have done a daily regimen that involves injecting hydrogen-peroxide mouthwash into the pulp chamber through the hole with a hypodermic syringe.Every day the mouthwash is injected directly into the pulp chamber under high pressure so as to flush out any food that's gotten inside the tooth and also to control any bacteria that may be living inside the pulp chamber or up in the root canals. The hole also functions as a vent so that the tooth can't pressurize and force any infections up into the jawbone. The problem with root canals is that they seal up the tooth and trap any infections inside. This method uses the opposite approach. It leaves the tooth open so that any potential infection inside the tooth can be dealt with hygienically. It's simple, easy, inexpensive and it works.--FVNTOM IIX
Did the abscess at the root of your tooth (seen on X-ray) disappear? Cus acute abscess may be painless, but it doesn't mean that the bacteria in the canal is gone.
--
Joe VignoloThe abscess is gone and over time the bone has filled back in around the root apex. Also, at first I could push on the gum adjacent to the tooth and puss would come out along the gum line and it would hurt there. But now I push there and nothing comes out and I don't feel any pain. The bacteria in the root canals isn't gone and it never will be either. Your entire mouth is full of bacteria all the time. The key is to hygienically keep the the mouth clean enough so that your immune system has a fighting chance to keep the harmful bacteria in check. In my case this extends to keeping the pulp chamber and root canals of that one tooth hygienically clean inside so as to prevent any further infection.--Joe Vignolo
During a root canal they drill a large hole in the top of the tooth so as to access the root canals. Unfortunately, this weakens the crown structurally and makes it prone to cracking. This is why most people have to get a cap after a root canal. In contrast, the small hole in the side of my tooth apparently hasn't weakened the tooth or caused it to crack. As such I've been able to retain and continue using the natural crown to chew on. That eliminated the necessity for me to have the tooth capped. The other problem with a root canal is that once the tooth is sealed up and capped, what happens if the tooth gets reinfected inside? Here's a hint. The two dentists that wanted to do a root canal on me gave me a disclaimer to sign stating that if the root canal failed and the tooth got reinfected again I'd have to pay them to remove the cap and do the whole root canal treatment all over again. In other words no guarantee. Hell, I wouldn't let anyone work on my car under terms like that, let alone myself. This is the exactly the reason for leaving the hole permanently open. It allows me to have permanent access to the pulp chamber and root canals to keep them clean and prevent any reinfection of the jawbone. Also, in a sealed tooth the infection inside the pulp chamber and root canals migrates out of the root apexes because bacterial metabolism produces gas that pressurizes the interior of a sealed tooth. However, my tooth cannot pressurize any more because the hole acts as a pressure vent. The vent removes an important part of the mechanism that drives infection outside of an infected tooth that is sealed up.Finally, I had estimates for the root canal treatment and cap of around $3,000. Having the hole drilled and removing the pulp cost me $140. That's a savings of $2,860. After 4 years the results have been great from a quality of life standpoint. No problems at all. So why should I have spent all that extra money? Please explain.--
GABY RODZas you can see everyone its been almost a year (in Feb) and I have not gotten checked out, the tooth got white again but I still feel pressure and a bit of pain on it when I push it up with my finger, before I couldn't feel cold, now I feel it. not as much as my left tooth but it is sensitive to the cold. I took cod liver oil, and other natural stuff for bruised tooth and for the nerves. when i first got the X-ray, they didn't really show anything, but I havent gone back to check it out to take another one. My tooth has improved but I still feel a bit of pain, but I could bite fine.

It sounds like your tooth is healing naturally. It might take a while to heal completely, but what's the rush? So good for you, but bad for your dentist's bank account. Looks like he won't be taking his Caribbean vacation this winter while you freeze up here working two jobs to pay for it.
--vonshango
congrats, but keep us posted, except for my molar cracking the day after, i had a no-pain RC experience. for me the extractions are horrific, regular dds or holistic, the horror was the same: my soft tissues go numb, but i feel everything in the bone, root endings, every millimeter of bone through bone movement.
----
Joe Vignolo
I'm now well past 5 years and the tooth is still doing fine. There is no evidence of any additional bone loss or infection. The tooth is also not getting loose and becoming more mobile. You are correct that it does require diligence although it's not a lot of additional effort over and above my regular oral hygiene. I maintain my teeth myself and due to finances I don't...

Good for you. I have learned that you just have to speak out or else dentists will do what brings in more money and unfortunately, holistic dentists do the same thing - you just sometimes never know what is going to work because it seams like every single tooth has a mind of its own. Yes, once the tooth is extracted a whole new set of issues pop up.--
vonshangogreat option logically. what is the name of the procedure in case we need to ask about it? is hole into molar at an angle easier for you to do from front vs from the side? doesnt hole jam up ever? i'll assume you mean a dental hygiene syringe vs medical. what kind of 'mouthwash' do you use? what is the procedure called? i'm thinking the hole allows oxygen in which should help kill/starve the anerobic bacteria which are the ruthless ones.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but it's difficult to be open minded with what he is preaching when he looks so disheveled and unkempt. That's the trouble with hippies, many of the things they believe may have some validity, but the message portrayal and delivery just makes it hard to take seriously.
--vonshangoas to 'hippy look' get past it, but i've now seen both regular and holistic dds for exams/xrays/cleanings and extractions, and if you found a trustworthy DDS then trust the RC and 90% success rate as relevant and safe enough for 90% of us and read Scott Otterson's entry as difficult as it is with no paragraph breaks.
Scott Otterson
The quackary is unbelievable with this cult following. Not only do they think there is such a thing as a "holistic dentist," but they all use the same study from 1910 to back up their claims, they disregard advancements in modern endodontics. The myths discussed in all these anti root canal videos have been debunked several times.
#1 the claim that most root canals are performed on people with mercury fillings. Composite or white fillings fail on average around 5 years. Amalgams or mercury fillings last much longer 20-40 years before needing replacement. There is extensive research to back this.
Next, the focal infection theory was adopted by a dentist and researcher named Dr. Weston A. Price referred to in this video who wrote a book on it in 1922. His methods have been heavily scrutinized due to the lack of a control in his research and the amount of bacteria he used on the animals were extreme and beyond physiological feasibility, not to mention they used culturing to find their results. Any research on the subject done prior to the 1970s utilizing modern tests such as PCR, Pyrosequencing, DNA-DNA hybridization or more current methods is obsolete. Cultures are not the gold standard for bacterial studies anymore.
Dr. Mercola knows this. This anti-root canal cult refers us to a study performed in the early 1900s, back in a time when they used sterilized sparrow droppings as a root canal filling material, no joke this really was used 1857 Watt. There are 1000's of dental materials today many of which are biocompatible, back then you could count legitimate materials on one hand. Back then they didn't wear gloves, didn't use microscopes, didn't have CBCTs.
And let's be honest, you know that "holistic" dentistry is a crock, everything used in dentistry has chemicals. We use these materials only because it's the best we currently have. 10-20 years from now everything in dentistry will be biocompatible, for that I cannot wait, it will be awesome!
Teeth do not always remain toxic after root canals. 84-96% of teeth heal following root canals (Sjogren) depending on their status upon arrival. Radiographs and CBCTs show bone healing in areas where there were lesions. In as little as 6 months complete bone regeneration can be seen. The claim about cancer being linked to root canals comes from a man who is a doctor who lost his license to practice medicine, he claims to be a "healer" and he wrote an anecdotal expert opinion (lowest tier of evidence) in a magazine stating that most of his cancer patients had root canals.
I know there are science-minded people who read that statement and immediately ask how that proves association... you could just as easily say that all cancer patients have had the flu at some point in their life and the virus contributed to cancer cell formation, it's simply illogical and not backed by any evidence.
The idea of pulling out your root canal treated tooth after it's healed is ludicrous, it's over a 100 year old idea that tooth pain was associated with psychosis so people had all their teeth extracted. At that time those were there "greatest" dentists of their time. Why don't we pull out all the teeth of patients suffering from scizophrenia today? If the tooth heals it's because the dentist effectively removed the etiology from within the root canal, the source of the infection, when that is gone the body will heal what is present externally from the tooth. That is why they are successful, it's because the body does illicit an immune response.
This and that documentary Root Cause uses Price's study form 1910 as a basis for all of their claims; it's a very poor study with no controls and a flawed and unrealistic methodology. Please quit spreading widespread panic and distrust of dentists who practice based on recent scientific evidence, rather than faulty evidence and lies about the dental profession.
Research within the last 10-15 years shows that you are more likely to develop endocarditis or bacteremias from brushing your teeth every day than you are from a root canal procedure (Martin; Lockhart). We leave dead cancer cells in the body after chemotherapy, and macrophages clean it up, the same occurs around roots following root canal procedures. You can't and don't always have to cut out the infection. In the case of infected teeth we have seen that root canal therapy is quite effective upon initial therapy around 90% of the time, and around 80% of the time in retreatment, and those results are from dental students with limited experience, which stand to assume that a specialist or experienced dentist would have even better statistics.
Of the small percentage that fail, most of them are cysts or non tooth related, in those cases extraction or apicoectomy are recommended treatments. In my opinion extraction is and will always be a last resort or the obvious choice for a non-restorable tooth.
--vonshangoi think weston price has made key discoveries re nutrition that leads to bad teeth/bone growth and array of physical maladies we see since introducing processed sugars/cereals/grains vs prior, but your enumerated points are well taken.
use line breaks so we can easily read your post. while it is very hard to read, you make some good points, one worth repeating:"We leave dead cancer cells in the body after chemotherapy, and macrophages clean it up, the same occurs around roots following root canal procedures. You can't and don't always have to cut out the infection. In the case of infected teeth we have seen that root canal therapy is quite effective upon initial therapy around 90% of the time."

I have to agree with a lot that you said. I had 6 root canals. The first one failed after the dentist did a retreatment then I stupidly had the tooth bleached numerous times, veneered it and then the tooth got weaker and the dentist bonded it and then it got so loose I had to have an extraction and an implant. All my other five root canals lasted until the dentist found decay in a tooth, pulled it and did the 2nd implant. Then a root canal fractured and I had another implant. The now I have 3 more root canals that need to be extracted related to pain, and I am looking at 2 more implants $$$$$$$, if I want any kind of stable bite. I am totally convinced that the implant insertion caused enough trauma to cause the root canals to fail. Now I have lots of intermittent pain and can't get the teeth extracted for 2 more weeks.
Or, for the last 5 years I have been on this super healthy diet and the rotting root canals just want out. Personally, eating a super healthy diet is the key to fixing your teeth, but dentist won't admit it. And even if you have had dental work it is never too late to turn your diet around in fact it is a must to prevent any more problems. Of course now my concern is that the dentist had to leave in the infected dental ligaments when he inserted the implants and I am hoping the microphages are doing their job, so lets keep our microphages and our immune system happy with a health diet. So far the 1st implant is 9 years old and is doing well. BTW studies are done to prove their point and are often inconclusive. And I read that the failure rate for a root canal is 50% and 25% with retreatment.
--vonshangowhere did you read of RC failure rate of 50%? we can read almost anything, so citing the source for radical statistics is key.
